2023 Asian Scientists 100 Honoree
Since 2016, Asian Scientist Magazine puts together a list of the most accomplished researchers in the region whose groundbreaking research projects have helped us understand and transform our world for the better.
With honorees having different scientific studies ranging from genome sequencing of SARS-CoV-2 to veterinary medicine, we are very proud to announce that our very own Dr. Aletta Yñiguez is among the Filipino scientists that were able to garner such a high honor.
Her marine science research work focuses on environmental monitoring to understand the effects of the changing environment, collaborating closely with local communities. Most recently, she worked with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to make use of artificial intelligence as an early-warning system for harmful algal blooms (HABs).
Dr. Yñiguez’s systems use accessible and inexpensive components, including underwater cameras, lasers, depth sensors, and global positioning devices to gather and process data.
The work that she has done, educating and equipping local fisherfolk with the necessary infrastructure, are key solutions that enable sustainable fishing.
