The UP Marine Science Institute (UP MSI) begins the 2023 summer expeditions with a research cruise to Pag-asa Island led by Chief Scientist Dr. Deo Onda. The cruise will be conducting periodic monitoring of environments around Pag-asa Island and study its socio-economic aspects.

Researchers from UP MSI will be assisted by members of the Philippine Navy – Naval Meteorological and Oceanographic Center (PN – NAVMETOC) to learn about plankton studies, plastics pollution, and oceanography. Meanwhile, University of the Philippines Los Baños – Integrated Natural Resources and Environment Management (UP Los Baños – INREM) will focus on framework development for coastal and marine natural capital accounting.
