This International Day of Biological Diversity and as the Philippines celebrates Month of the Ocean, the UP Marine Science Institute is launching a new webpage featuring the marine life and research done in the Kalayaan Island Group over the years.

PH’s first metallomics research facility opens in UP Marine Science Institute
The UP Marine Science Institute opened the first metallomics facility in the Philippines last Wednesday, October 22, 2025. Led by Balik Scientist Dr. Irene B. Rodriguez, the establishment of the metallomics facility will help advance research on trace metals, macronutrients, and their interactive effects on marine biogeochemical cycles.

PH’s best-managed MPAs recognized in Para El MAR 2025
ILOILO CITY, PHILIPPINES— “Let Para el MAR be a space for collaboration, learning, and renewed hope.” These were the words of Ms. Edwina Garchitorena, Country Director of the Zoological Society of London-Philippines to officially open the 2025 Para el MAR celebration themed, Bantay Karagatan, Bantay Kinabukasan: Local Action for Biodiversity and the Future. The 10th Para el MAR (MPA Awards & Recognition), organized by the Marine Protected Area Support Network (MSN) and coinciding with the network’s 20th anniversary, was held on September 17–18, 2025, at the Zuri Hotel in Iloilo City, drawing over 200 participants.

UP MSI participates in M/V DA-BFAR Demersal Stock Assessment and Oceanographic Survey in Visayan and Samar Sea
Researchers from the UP Marine Science Institute, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) research vessel, M/V DA-BFAR, participated in the recently concluded Visayan and Samar Sea Demersal Stock Assessment and Oceanographic Survey on board M/V DA-BFAR from May 2 to 12, 2025.

A team of 15 researchers and staff from UP MSI, UP Cebu, DENR-BMB, and NAVMETOC conducted a research expedition aboard the UP MSI research vessel M/Y Panata at Rizal Reef (Commodore Reef) and Dalagang Bukid Shoal (Northeast Investigator Shoal).

UP researchers conduct field survey in Pag-asa Island through DENR-BMB funded project
A team of 15 researchers and staff from UP Marine Science Institute, UP Los Baños School of Environmental Science and Management (UPLB SESAM), and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Biodiversity Management Bureau (DENR-BMB) conducted a field survey in Pag-asa Island, Kalayaan Island Group in the West Philippine Sea last February 17-27, 2025.
